Jay Peak
Under the Jay Cloud
“Tumbeldown shack in Bigfoot County, snowed so hard that the roof caved in.”
It’s a line from the Grateful Dead’s “Brown-Eyed Women,” and if you spend enough winters at Vermont’s Jay Peak it stops sounding like a lyric and starts sounding like a weather forecast. Around here people talk about storms the way fishermen talk about tides. They watch the radar, the wind direction and the temperature over Lake Champlain. And when the clouds stack up over the Green Mountains, locals start saying the same thing: “The Jay Cloud is coming back.”
If you’ve never ridden Jay Peak, that phrase might sound like a joke. But for the people who live here, it’s part folklore, part meteorology and part survival story. Because at Jay Peak, weather doesn’t just pass through. It moves in.
