You know the storm is coming, and you hold.
You are prepared.
You know what comes on the other side and retreat isn’t a consideration.
We came here to be patient.
The rest is up to mother nature.
Drake Olson’s little Cessna ski-plane buzzed off into the distance. He’d been shuttling gear and people out all day. By my 7 p.m. arrival, the cook tent was already set up and everyone dialed in their personal tent zones. This was our home for four weeks.
It was late March and our goal was to assist and document Ryland Bell riding a big spine line he had seen from a scouting flight. If you want to score in Alaska, you need time and you need a solid team. Ed Shanley acted as the safety/guide, Chris Galvin was along to ride, Canyon Florey would be joining for a handful of days, and Peter Wojnar and I were there to film what would become DIG. Ed, Canyon and Ryland have all spent time in the big mountains together, and Chris has been shredding with Ryland around Haines for years. Everyone was 100 percent confident with each other’s skills. Everyone was in.
