Wietse Thomas’ Ordinary Impressions

Finn Westbury was riding this spot in a sketchy neighborhood by an old house with a bunch of trash around it. I saw his reflection and asked him to stop for a second.
The last day of my trip to New York state with the Salomon team. We were staying in Jamestown and riding in Pennsylvania as well. Finn Westbury was riding this spot in a sketchy neighborhood by an old house with a bunch of trash around it. I saw his reflection and asked him to stop for a second. It was a hard place to get a good action shot, but the trick turned out well for video.

Wietse Thomas is a silent assassin with a keen eye for finding beauty in the ordinary—all while bringing a breath of fresh air to what snowboard photography is “supposed” to look like. Why not have the filmer center-frame in the shot? Why not have a sequence of someone smoking a cigarette after getting a clip instead of the trick? Or make a sequence, but it’s shaped like a pyramid on it’s side?

Growing up in the flatlands of Belgium, Wietse started out filming skate sessions at his local park. Snowboarding was something reserved for the holidays—and those were few and far between. It wasn’t until he moved to Oslo, Norway, at age 23 that he really started shooting snowboarding. Just like in his earlier days, when he couldn’t choose between photo or video, he kept doing both. Over time, he became a digital media multitool.
