Irreverence and Frequent Typos

Michael Ciaramella
American-born and now based in Costa Rica, Michael Ciaramella funds his surf habit through “mediocre prose.” Alongside his wife, Ana, and their two rescue dogs (Woody, 9 and Milo, 2), he spends his dry hours as editor-in-chief of Stab Magazine, a surf publication “known for cultural irreverence and frequent typos.” Apparently cash-strapped this year, he had the audacity to submit a piece to The Snowboarder’s Journal—despite not seeing snow in over three years. We said yes.

Madeline Dopplick
Born and raised in Long Beach, CA, and now based in Seattle, Madeline Dopplick didn’t start snowboarding until moving north in 2017. Her obsession with magazines soon led her to a camera, and she quickly discovered how much more connected she felt to the snowboarding community when she took the time to unstrap and photograph her friends. Today, while pursuing a career in photography, Madeline works full-time at The Service Board—a nonprofit dedicated to breaking down barriers to snowboarding. You can usually catch Madeline shooting with friends at The Summit at Snoqualmie and Mt. Baker Ski Area, the two places that have helped her find her footing behind a lens. Elina Lehmkuhl
Swiss-born, Norwegian-Argentinian photographer Elina Lehmkuhl—self-proclaimed “Latina Viking”—works across photography, film and design. Her career began when she picked up a camera, traveled alone and accidentally turned winging it into a business plan. Based in Verbier, Switzerland, she shoots mountain sports year-round, collaborating with global brands, the Freeride World Tour, and anyone game for a little weather and a side quest. Recently, she directed her first film, The Underdogs, proving her motto: say yes before you know how. See more from Elina on Instagram at @lemcool_collective.

Joey Sackett
Adventure and documentary photographer Joey Sackett explores both the insane and mundane. He’s a landlocked midwestern boy who moved to Jackson, WY, to pretend he’s surfing while on a snowboard or skateboard. Sometimes he does surf, usually in rivers. Chicken Joe is his role model. Joey’s also been known to suffer up tall mountains, summiting the highest peaks in North and South America. His camera is often the excuse to follow his curiosity into new terrain. He’s on instagram @jsack_foto.

Shawna Wianecki-Paoli
From the grassy knolls of the Midwest to the high peaks of the Tetons, Shawna Wianecki-Paoli has chased snowboarding across the Rockies, North Cascades and beyond. A self-described “shralpinist,” she’s spent the past eight winters in Glacier, WA. She co-stars in The Underdogs, a new film that documents an all-women’s splitboard expedition to Alaska’s Talkeetna Range (April 2025). It’s currently premiering on three continents. When not snowboarding Shawna commercial fishes to make ends meet.
